Kiwanis Sophomore of the Year is GHS student Jose Yepez

Jose Yepez and Jimmy Dickey, President of the Greenville Kiwanis

Jimmy Dickey, President of the Greenville Kiwanis Club, presented Jose Yepez with a $600 check on May 10 at Greenville High School.

Jose was selected as the 2023 Sophomore of the Year by the Club. His application and essay will move on to the Division 32 level and then on to compete at the Texas-Oklahoma district level. The winner of the Texas-Oklahoma district will be announced at a later date.

Jose is a member of FFA, where he developed a passion for lawn care and landscaping. This led him to start his own business, J&M Lawn Care and join the GHS Key Club, a part of the Golden K’s and Kiwanis Clubs, to continue providing community service in lawn care needs.

The award is named after Walter Hurst, a longtime member of the Texas-Oklahoma Foundation Board and financial supporter of the Texas-Oklahoma Foundation. He proposed and lobbied the Texas-Oklahoma Board for three years to start a scholarship fund for sophomores. The scholarship award is not based on academics, but on leadership qualities.

The Sophomore of the Year award strives to recognize and develop leadership potential commencing with high school sophomores, and to encourage and prepare the next generation of civic and corporate leadership for America’s future. A second goal is to help sophomores gain experience in applying for scholarships. A third goal is to educate people in the schools and communities about the Kiwanis organization.
