On May 11, 2023, at approximately 5:00 pm, the Sheriff's office was notified that K9 Kumo was deceased. K9 Kumo was discovered by his handler/partner inside his vehicle.
His handler was Kevin Everett and he was the owner of K9 Kumo and in agreement to work for the Rains County Sheriff's Office patrol division.
"An internal investigation was started. Rains County Sheriff's Office has been diligently investigating the cause of this unfortunate loss. During the course of this investigation Rains County Sheriff's Office policies, procedures and state laws have been followed.", said Rains County Sheriff Michael Hopkins in a posted statement.
Rains County Sheriff's Office has taken up a collection of funds within the Sheriff's Office to pay for a memorial to be placed in the lobby at the Sheriff's Office to honor K9 Kumo.
